A nonprofit working to steer powerful technology away from extreme, large-scale risks. On AI it does policy work in the EU and the US, and published the 2023 open letter calling for a pause.

The Future of Life Institute’s mission is “steering transformative technology towards benefiting life and away from extreme large-scale risks”, covering AI, biotechnology and nuclear weapons. It does policy advocacy and research “across the United States, the European Union and around the world”, and publishes an AI Safety Index that grades AI companies on safety. futureoflife.org

In March 2023 it published Pause Giant AI Experiments, asking AI labs to pause training systems more powerful than GPT-4 for at least six months. It also maintains artificialintelligenceact.eu, a guide to the EU AI Act.
